NZ South Island Visit

South Island NZ  simply stunning.  Travel Blogs from our time in the South Island where the mountains meet the water, the air is clean and clear and the people friendly.

NZ come to an end, were on our way back to Australia.  It’s been a blast, we could not have seen or explored the South Island the way we did without spending the time down there.  For months we watched the weather and then embraced the specific area when the sun came out.  Living in the mountains the weather is very changeable, have to make the most of those sunny days.  The highlight for me was walking the Hook...

Travelling  from the South to the North, were on the move again.  Sad to leave the South but a nice drive up through Kaikoura.  Amazing to see the extent of the damage to the roads from the earthquake.  We sailed on Wednesday 7th March into Wellington and now have a window of opportunity to get to the top of the North Island (Cape Regina) before shipping this lot back to Australia.

One thing about travellin...

2018 March Hare Rally in Waimate NZ.  Held on the Waimate Show grounds, a well-run event.  Good music on Friday & Saturday night, good food vendors.  Bar prices were realistic.  Apparently one of the biggest ones in the South Island.   Was surprised at the number of trikes in this area. A cross section of bikes attends these rallies. Must say after tenting it at the Vincent was great to have the caravan to go back to at night....

So, time to move on from Central Otago.   It has been an amazing year exploring this area.  Part of our heart will be left in the Deep South, after all we do have family and friends in the area. Hardest part of visiting loved ones is leaving…….     I’m not sure if I could endure the cold winters year after year though.  We have been lucky and had a very mild winter, coldest we got was -6.  But we had 4 seasons, each one bringi...

Headed down to Burt Munro Challenge Weekend in Invercargill on Saturday.  Good weekend, with lots of Bikes and lots of events.

We scored a motel room at the Top 10 Caravan Park as almost everything in town was sold out.  (Pays to decide early if you want to attend these rallies.)  We have stayed here before and very clean and tidy. A few bikes there too, so meet up with some North Islanders for a drink on Saturday Night....

Looks like we are giving up semi normal life again and hitting the road for a while.  Being that we are in New Zealand on a Temporary Import Permit, our time is coming to an end and we will have to leave the Deep South of New Zealand and head back to Australia.

Very mixed emotions as we start to prepare for an end of February departure. Leaving family and new friends behind will be the hardest, but it has been...

Vincent County Rally our first Kiwi Bike Rally.  The Bike rally in its 34th year, was just out of Alexandra at Galloway on the river in central Otago.  Although the Friday Night was very cold, the music was good, and we got to have a look around at the lay of the land.  We did bail and headed home to the caravan instead of camping…

Saturday Arvo we headed back out, tent on the back for a night at the Rally.  The weath...

So, I haven’t been attending to my blog recently…. Sorry, Life seems to get in the way, especially that WORK word… it’s been a busy time with the silly season and all. Have really enjoyed learning the ropes at the motel and now confident that I can manage a motel and keep the standards expected by the owners. Now to start looking for more of this work as we head back to Australia. Unfortunately, lotto hasn’t given us a major s...

All American Weekend...  Good weekend in Timaru,  good turnout of cars did a drive and went through Geraldine Auto Restorations, doing some good work down there.

Leaving Timaru we headed out towards Fairlie and over Burkes Pass (state highway 8) to Tekapo and came across Three Creeks Service Station, this guy has a great array of giftware and signs and makes wooden furniture.  The buildings have been set up to look l...

Been a while since I posted, sorry, still check out my FB site or Instagram for day by day moments.  Creating memories is the idea of travelling 1 on 1.. We are here in NZ working so time does get gobbled up. Still the last couple of weekends we have spent some time up in the Bendigo Area. Rich in gold mining history a great place to explore. The Bendigo ruins are easy to get to via a gravel road, but today we did the Thompson...

Our move to Clyde has been really great.Peaceful and friendly town.  It is nestled in a sheltered basin beside the mighty Clutha River amongst a rugged landscape dotted with dark schist rocks.

It emerged during the New Zealand gold rush in the 1800's, but nowadays it is known for its Historic district. The many historic buildings have survivedand been refurbished as cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and accommodation. You can defi...

The sun was out and a warm ride from Clyde to our destination Naseby.  We have been out to Naseby a few times, but our first on the Bike and a good round ride on a warm spring day.

We turned off just before Omakau onto Ophir Bridge Road to ride over the 1880 Daniel O'Connell suspension Bridge crossing the Manuherikia River.  The bridge is one of only a few suspension bridges left in the South Island.  crossing the br...

2 hour drive from Alexandra and you're on the coast in Dunedin.  Went down via Roxburgh to Milton and into Dunedin.  First stop McIver & Veitch - Harley Davidson dealership.  Good shop and friendly staff. Drove the worlds steepest Residential Street - Baldwin Street.  Short but definitely steep.

Needed some exercise so checked out the Tunnel Beach Walk, a good 20 minute downhill walk to breathtaking views over the ocean,...

When the sun comes out then it's time to bring the Harley out of hibernation.  What a great day for a day ride from Clyde to Wanaka over the Crown Range and back to Clyde.  Good stops at Luggate Hotel and Cardrona Hotel.  Recommend this ride.

Wanaka is a busy lakeside town, with good bars, restaurants and hotels.  If you decide you want to stay here.  The lake is surrounded by mountains and beautiful on clear days or those...
